After any user creates a wiki, they can probably feel unsure of what to do after it’s been created. Below are some details about each aspect of maintaining a wiki after it was created
Page creation and customization[]
Pages can be created for characters, media and anything related to the specific topic or vertical, which are commonly films, tv shows, video games, anime, music and other topics. Page layout guidelines can be listed on a Manual of Style page whenever you’re wanting to create one.
Requesting help with a wiki[]
You can ask on the discord server, through Special:Contact or discussions. Those places are mostly for help with templates, css and other wiki maintenance. Each platform has different purposes depending on what you’re needing help with.
The Discord server and discussions are both mostly used for requesting help about templates and design (through CSS, JavaScript and other programming languages). contacting staff is also available to help with any issues, requests for extensions or reports related to your newly created wiki.
Scripts[]
You are also welcome to find any scripts on Developers wiki that would help out with the wiki you’ve finally created. Some scripts require additional JS customization through pages such as
MediaWiki:Common.js
, which can be requested through contacting staff.
Social media[]
Once you’ve maintained the wiki enough and are able to bring in new editors, social media can be created to help the wiki be regularly edited or viewed.
Discord[]
Discord is a great start for your newly created wiki since it’s a messaging app that a lot of wikis regularly use to serve as an additional communication platform outside of discussions and forums. If you decide to create a server, there are a lot of scripts available to add a link to the specific server, this script is the best choice, but other scripts might be better for the wiki.
Promoting new administrators[]
Whenever you’re ready to have new administrators. You can add the group to a page named
Special:UserRights
which provides a list of groups to add for the user you’re wanting to promote. It also provides optional expiration dates if you’re only intending on promoting an administrator temporarily.
Rules and policies[]
You can also create a set of wiki rules to help establish the system of blocks and making sure vandalism is stopped. In cases where you’re unable to stop the vandalism, you can always report those issues on w:c:soap or staff (on the contact page)
Maintenance special pages[]
It’s helpful to look through those special pages regularly. These include WantedPages (pages that are rendered as redlinks), Double (pages that were renamed 2 or more times) and broken redirects (redirects that link to nonexistent or deleted pages) and others.
